The creepy little man dancing in a barn video, explained
The creepy little man dancing in a barn, tiptoeing over the straw while a woman covers her face, is the AI Rumpelstiltskin meme. It was made with an AI video model, first posted in August 2026, and took over TikTok at the end of September once people set it to Riff Raff's "Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz". If you only remember what it looked like and not what it was called, this page is for you.
How to recognise the video
You are probably thinking of this clip if you remember most of these details:
- A very small man, often described as an imp, goblin, gnome or dwarf, in a sparkly black tuxedo with a bow tie and wild pale hair. Some remixes dress him in an orange coat instead.
- A barn or hayloft with straw on the floor, warm lamp light and soft film grain, so it looks like an 80s fantasy movie.
- He holds a finger to his lips to hush the camera, spreads his arms and tiptoes across the straw in time to the beat.
- A woman in the straw watches, then covers her face in shock or horror in a close-up.
- Most posts use the rap song "Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz" by Riff Raff and a joke caption such as dreams after taking melatonin or sneaking downstairs at 2 a.m.
NBC News described the character as a "creepy" imp-like figure, and viewers quoted in its report called him "that little guy" who is "so creepy". The full original clip goes on: he turns the straw into gold coins, the woman kisses him and he becomes a prince. The meme versions usually keep only the tiptoe part and the shocked reaction.
What people call it
Because nobody knew where it came from at first, the same video travels under several names. These all point to the same scene:
- Rumpelstiltskin 1987 or 1987 Rumpelstiltskin dance, from the mistaken belief that it is a scene from the 1987 film.
- Rumpelstiltskin tip toe or the tiptoe dance meme, after the walk and the song.
- "Tip Toein' In My Jordans", the name Know Your Meme uses, from the song lyric.
- The melatonin dreams video, after one of the first viral captions.
- The creepy imp, goblin or little man dancing in a barn, which is how most people describe it when they ask a friend or an AI assistant.
Is the little man real, and is it from an old movie?
Neither. The performer is synthetic: an AI model generated the man, the woman, the barn and the camera work. NBC News names AI artist and filmmaker Tatyana Tereshchenko as the creator of the original, posted on Instagram on August 27, 2026. It took days before viewers realised it was AI, which is why so many people went looking for the film it came from and landed on the 1987 Cannon musical Rumpelstiltskin, where Billy Barty played the title role. That film has no scene like this. The full story, with dates, is on the Rumpelstiltskin 1987 page.
Rumpelstiltskin kid: is the dancer a child?
No. People search for "Rumpelstiltskin kid" and "Rumpelstiltskin kid dancing" because the character is tiny and moves like a mischievous child, and because parents film their own kids copying the tiptoe walk. The dancer in the viral clip is an adult-looking imp generated by AI, not a real child and not a child actor. The tale he comes from, the Brothers Grimm story of the miller's daughter and the straw spun into gold, is also a classic children's story, which adds to the mix of search results.
If your kid loves the dance, the safest way to join the trend is to film them doing the tiptoe walk themselves to the Riff Raff sound. Our tool does not make AI videos of children: the rules allow photos of consenting adults only, so a child's photo cannot be put into the barn scene here.
Why everyone is putting new people in it
Once the clip was known to be AI, it became a template. The barn, the beat and the reaction stay the same, and creators swap who plays the little man and who plays the woman: friends, coworkers, TV characters, mascots. The joke works because the scene is so specific that anyone can recognise it in a second, and the new cast makes it personal. These TikTok versions show the pattern:
